ADC (Attack Damage Carry), also known as Bot Laner, is a role built on a unique power curve: you struggle early, spike mid, and dominate late. Unlike top laners or mid assassins, ADCs don't usually start with strong base stats. Instead, you scale with items, not levels.
This is why ADC's work hand in hand with the support to get to the mid and late game. To be honest "work hand in hand" is a nice way of putting it, however the reality is that AD Carries have no agency over state of game itself in the early game and are at the mercy of all of the other lanes in the early game. The Support role exists to babysit the ADC until they grow up into the strong 1v5 late game monster.
This role is designed for players who enjoy calculated risks, precise positioning, and being the primary damage dealer in teamfights.
You enjoy hyper-carrying in late-game 5v5s.
You like the responsibility of being a consistent damage threat.
You’re confident in your mechanical skills and kiting.
You can stay calm under pressure and rely on your support early on.
You’re comfortable farming efficiently for extended periods.
You have to endure being completely at the mercy of the Supports and Junglers for basically the first 10 - 15 minutes of the game. If your support roams, you just have to live with the fact that you are being sacked for other lanes to get ahead. It's a very rollercoaster role in that one game you may be the center of attention and may go 15/0 and then the next game your support may just roam all game leaving you 1v2 or 1v3 to go 0/15 under tower. In order to be a Great ADC you have to have the patience and accept this reality and be willing to live and die on the fact that you have no agency in the early game.
You are the main target in EVERY fight. I mean it, you will be miserable unless you know the limits of YOUR champion, all of your ally champions, and all your opponents' champions. Without a massive knowledge base you will not be able to effectively survive teamfights long enough to even output the damage your champion is capable of. ADC is a role that requires you to push your champion to the limit that YOU are capable of. In order to be a Great ADC you have accept the reality that you will most likely be the main target and die first in many if not every fight.
You need EGO to play ADC. It's a role that requires lots and lots of confidence in your mechanical skills and kiting ability. In order to be a Great ADC you have accept the reality that you will most have to develop the "main character ego" that the league of legends community memes about because it is true to an extent.
If you don't have patience and cannot stay calm under pressure, don't play ADC. The goal for most teams will usually revolve around getting the ADC ahead as soon as possible, or setting the enemy ADC back as much as possible so that they don't have an opportunity to hit their power spike. This means that you will constantly be under pressure from everyone and everything due to how volatile this role is. Your support is your tool to relieve this pressure and make your laning phase easier and more comfortable. In order to be a Great ADC you have to have the patience and accept this reality and be willing to rely on your Support and let them carry you through the early game.
You have to be comfortable farming extensively for a LONG time. The nature of the ADC role is that they share EXP with the support for the first 10-15 minutes of the game, this means that they are nearly always behind in exp compared to the Solo roles such as Top, Jungle, and Mid. You will be farming for nearly 30-35 minutes per game before you hit your peak, this means that you must be very comfortable with farming effectively and soaking up EVERY creep and exp you are able to get your hands on. If you're struggling to CS effectively, this role may not be for you. In order to be a Great ADC you have to be averaging atleast 8CS/minute every game even when you are in losing games or losing lanes.
Power Curve Awareness
Most ADCs (Jinx, Kai'Sa, Aphelios) have:
Weak early game
Strong 2-item powerspike
Massive late-game presence
Understanding your champion's spike (e.g., Kraken + Runaan's on Jinx) is crucial for shot-calling fights and rotations.
Wave Management
The better you control the wave, the less you'll die, and the faster you'll scale.
Learn slow push for tower plates
Fast push to reset and roam
Freeze to deny and protect
Positioning
You're the priority target in every teamfight. Use:
Front-to-back positioning (stay behind your tanks)
Kiting techniques (attack-move, orb-walking)
Peel awareness (know which allies can protect you)
Itemization
Small item choices can swing fights.
Adapt mythic and boots to match enemy comp
Buy early executioner’s, QSS, or Guardian Angel as needed
Track gold efficiency and build sequencing
Synergy with Support
You're a 2-man lane, so communication is key.
Identify engage vs peel supports
Learn level 2 timing and when to spike together
Punish enemies after CDs are used
ADC isn't easy. You’re squishy, camped, and often blamed. But once you master wave control, item timings, and kiting, you'll carry games that felt unwinnable. It's one of the most rewarding roles in League when played with discipline because you are one of the few roles that are able to be in the driver seat in the late game to decide the outcome of the game.
